When choreographers create a routine: Are they thinking about the rhythm and sticking to the typical 1(and),2(and),3(and),4(and)? Are they thinking about the mood of the song? The topic of the song? Moves that would be too straight forward compared to the song? The feelings that get invoked when the audience sees the body moves a certain way? The overall flow of which direction the dancers seem to be moving, even though they’re stationary, with the movements of the body?
The list of questions can go on a little further but I’ll stop there.
The reason I wonder is because I have seen some choreographed routines over the past year that just don’t feel like they matched the song. They just don’t seem like it completed or went with the flow of the song.
I was watching some routines on youtube. There was an uptempo R&B song that was very aggressive and it was about a love gone wrong but becoming stronger after it and moving on. The choreography, though, looked like it was all about being up on each other and never separating. A lot of it was just movements that seemed to be “in” at about this time. It didn’t seem necessary for the girls to bounce their ass when the song is about not being treated like a sex object anymore. For a song about separation from the woman’s point of view, the guys didn’t need to be felt up on by their female partners that much. There was no pushing away movements either.
Another thing I have noticed is that there aren’t very many choreographed routines that have crazy different syncopated rhythms. It’s always “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and…”. I want to see some dancers on the 1 and then others on some triplets for a moment, and also some 16ths (if the song’s tempo allows for that to physically be posisble for the dancers), and some other rhythms varying… all at the same time.
BTW, this is mostly for bigger group routines.
Maybe it’s because I produce music but I feel like the routines should not always be so together in movement and look similar to the Nazis or North Korean or Russian military propaganda parades, or just any military(-style) marching (this is not a judgment of character, but the visual it can be compared to).
I think there should be more routines where there are different groups doing noticeably different parts on different rhythms but it all makes sense all together… like a full song or even a drummer soloist.
Like I said, maybe it’s because I produce music and pay attention to rhythms. The rhythm section creates subtleties that can give a song an interesting bounce. The music around it then guides the emotion.
I would like to learn the way of the choreographer…
…and then change it a bit.
