It’s hard to try and act a certain way following certain guidelines when a situation comes up that, to be comfortable, you might have to adapt by bending the rules a little bit. It should be easier to bend the rules you give yourself. What if the rules you might wanna bend are rules outside of yourself that might get you to lose your credibility as a (insert social category here)?
Should I do this? Should I do that? Should I? Shouldn’t I?
We all give ourselves or fit ourselves into images. We IMAGinE ourselves to be a certain style and then others get their own perception of us.
When we break that image, people get confused. They lose trust in you.
What if you’re caught between 2 ways? You started on the right but you’re slowly making your way to the left? People who knew you as a “right” kind of person are starting to look at you funny as you sway to the left a little bit.
What if the degree of separation between “right” and “left” was minimal? I mean the difference is like based on opinions that have no drastic consequence either way.
People wanna be EXTREMELY accepted or EXTREMELY a part of something. Then there is no room for error. A misunderstanding could screw you.
People have got to loosen up. Some people have got to stop being so extreme about things. A lot of people put themselves in corners because they don’t want to lose their image.
Your image is only as good or acceptable as the explanation you can give that makes it seem not bad to the people who perceive it.
So if you want to have the “right” image all the time, don’t try to keep one image. Try to be balanced. Try to be smart enough so you can explain your actions and why it’s good that you think “A” is better than “B” in each certain case.
If you always go with “A”, someday sooner than later, “B” will come back and bite you in the… place you don’t want to be bitten. Your image.
